About Me

Picture

I am a native Texan and grew up in Dallas.  As I pursued my doctorate degree, I had the opportunity to experience the West and East Coast.  During that time period, I realized Texas was home.  I am fluent in Cantonese and Vietnamese.  Being a second generation Asian American and having lived in different areas, I have come to respect and value diversity.  Understanding and considering one's cultural background (whether it be ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, etc) is important in the work I do.

I have been a therapist since 2004 and specialize in providing individual and couples therapy to older adolescents and adults.  Over the years, I have worked in a variety of settings including college counseling centers, community mental health clinics, mobile crisis team, and outpatient clinics.  My approach to therapy mainly draws from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).  I am trained to treat different anxiety disorders, specifically Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders.  I have undergone training with the Behavioral Therapy Training Institute to provide exposure-response prevention (ERP), the recommended treatment for individual dealing with OCD.  I have additional training in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT).  While I tend to draw from CBT, I do incorporate other styles and techniques to tailor each session to meet the specific needs of each person I work with.  I believe the most important and healing aspect of therapy is the relationship that is created between myself and the person sitting across from me.

Professional Background

I obtained my Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of California - Santa Barbara.  I completed my internship in Philadelphia at University of Pennsylvania Counseling and Psychological Services center.  After having lived on both coasts, I moved back to Texas to complete my post-doctoral fellowship at University of Texas - San Antonio Counseling Services center.  Prior to attending UCSB, I completed a Masters in Counseling Psychology at University of North Texas.  I received a Bachelors in Psychology from UT Austin.  I currently am a staff psychologist at UT Health Science Center - San Antonio Counseling Services.
