Individual Therapy

I provide individual counseling to young adolescents (11+) and adults that may be dealing with a variety of issues.  Therapy sessions are tailored specifically to each person.  The course of therapy depends on a variety of factors that is unique to each individual.  These factors include history, personal goals, individual strengths, culture, family background, and readiness for change.

During the initial session, I encourage individuals (and couples) to assess whether I am the right fit for them.  In order for therapy to be effective, it is important that one choose a therapist with whom they feel comfortable and safe with to explore difficult issues.  Being able to form a meaningful, trusting relationship is key.  As we get to know each other, I will be focusing on understanding your goals and needs to ensure I am the best therapist to help you.

In our work together, I will strive to understand (and help you understand) how your thoughts and perceptions of situations are influencing your feelings and behaviors.  I tend to use a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy approach coupled with Emotion Focused Therapy.  I will often draw from different approaches to address your specific needs and goals.

Couples Therapy

In couples therapy, I work with the couple to understand the current issues that are negatively impacting their relationship.  The purpose of the therapy is to help the couple decide on a common goal (whether it be to stay together or separate) and work towards achieving that goal.  Sessions focus on identifying the patterns of communication and behaviors that may be preventing the couple from enjoying the relationship.  Instead of focusing on content, I will help the couple to identify the underlying emotions and/or needs and communicate those needs in way that help facilitate change.  Partners learn how to be present for each other and how to problem solve in a more effective way, so that more time is devoted to enjoying the relationship.
